From the title of this post, I’ll bet you expected something risque, right? Something featuring ripped bodices, daring negligees or half-naked hunks with pecs up the wazoo. LOL. Gotcha!
To be fair, five years ago you’d have been absolutely right. There’s nothing like reading a steamy romance for entertainment and escape. (And maybe inspiration?) The only problem is, those paperback covers might have been inappropriate for the workplace or grandma’s house. Oh sure, you could cleverly fashion a fake cover from a grocery bag, but that pretty much gave away that you were reading something naughty, right?
Then, along comes electronic publishing. Initially, one had to read those stories on a computer, but it didn’t take long for smart retailers to jump on board. E-readers such as Nook, Kindle, I-Pad and phone apps made access and portability the name of the e-reading game. And let’s not forget about privacy. The privacy of an e-reader is no doubt what is responsible for the recent surge in the popularity of erotic literature.
I have a Kindle myself, and I absolutely love it. I bought a leather cover for mine, mostly as protection, but it also serves to make it appear that I’m reading a bound book. Who knows? I could be reading a classic; it could be self help, or it could be a frolicking romp in the hay. No one around me is the wiser.
And that’s what makes my Kindle cover my favorite naughty book cover. How about you? Do you still buy your books in paperback — even the naughty ones — or have you switched to an e-reader? If so, how do you like it?

I am so addicted to my Kindle. I can’t remember the last time I read a paperback. Which is nice, because i have young kids and they always like to look at my covers. When I was into all paranormal, my son had many questions about vampires.
I adore my Kindle, which I’ve had for almost 3 years. And then for Christmas I got a Kindle Fire. Even better! Love them both, still use both. What a great invention!
Dee, I think it’s interesting that you still use both your Kindle and your new Fire. I assumed I would pass on my Kindle when and if I get a Fire. Do you use them both as readers?
Hey, Pepper, guess we’ve all been away for a while… Anyway, to answer your question, it’s kind of hard to read the Fire in bright sunlight, but the old traditional Kindle is better in bright light. But the Fire is great for reading in bed, because I don’t have to have another light on. So it depends on where I am.
Thanks for clarifying your prior post, Dee. Yes, the Mavens are taking a break for awhile. We are all experiencing some personal challenges and finding time to work on our writing projects has been precious. We haven’t decided yet when we’ll be back. Thanks for checking in!
