My Favorite Naughty Book Cover

by Pepper on March 30, 2012

From the title of this post, I’ll bet you expected something risque, right?  Something featuring ripped bodices, daring negligees or half-naked hunks with pecs up the wazoo. LOL. Gotcha!

To be fair, five years ago you’d have been absolutely right. There’s nothing like reading a steamy romance for entertainment and escape. (And maybe inspiration?)  The only problem is, those paperback covers might have been inappropriate for the workplace or grandma’s house. Oh sure, you could cleverly fashion a fake cover from a grocery bag, but that pretty much gave away that you were reading something naughty, right?

Then, along comes electronic publishing. Initially, one had to read those stories on a computer, but it didn’t take long for smart retailers to jump on board. E-readers  such as Nook, Kindle, I-Pad and phone apps made access and portability the name of the e-reading game. And let’s not forget about privacy. The privacy of an e-reader is no doubt what is responsible for the recent surge in the popularity of erotic literature.

I have a Kindle myself, and I absolutely love it. I bought a leather cover for mine, mostly as protection, but it also serves to make it appear that I’m reading a bound book.  Who knows? I could be reading a classic; it could be self help, or it could be a frolicking romp in the hay. No one around me is the wiser.

And that’s what makes my Kindle cover my favorite naughty book cover. How about you? Do you still buy your books in paperback — even the naughty ones — or have you switched to an e-reader? If so, how do you like it?

I was talking to my husband last week and he asks me out of the blue, “Have you read that book 50 Shades of Grey?”

My response, “50 Shades of what?”  I’d never heard of it.

Well, turns out he’d heard about it from some of the women at his office, who’d heard about it from some women they knew, who’d no doubt heard about it from someone else.

After Googling it about twenty seconds later, I discovered that this book is climbing up the best seller charts everywhere and has already been optioned for a movie.  This is the author’s very first book, folks.  So obviously, I sat up and took notice.

What makes it different, you ask?  Well, it’s erotica, for one.  It’s kind of like a “cross over” hit.  People who’ve never read erotic romance before are picking it up and whispering to their friends about it.  The word of mouth phenomenon with this book is really pretty amazing.

The other thing that makes it different (in my opinion) is the cover.  For an erotic romance, the cover is intriguing.  No half naked man on the front (okay, I miss that a little), no woman stroking her unmentionables, just a simple black and white photo of a tie.  I like that.  I like it a lot.  Made me curious.  Made me want to pick it up and read it.

So…I downloaded it and am on chapter one.  I’ll let you know what I think.

My question to you is, have you heard of this book before?  Have you read it?  I’d love to hear your input-

March 15, 2012

I have lots and lots of favorite actresses.  Goldie Hawn (big time favorite), Emma Stone, Jennifer Aniston.  They all make me smile. But I think the actress that always hits it right out of the ball park for me would have to be Sandra Bullock.  I love just about everything she’s ever been in.  Her movies make [...]

March Madness and Daylight Savings

March 12, 2012

It’s my husband’s favorite time of year. It has nothing to do with the approach of spring or the extra hour of sunshine we get each day. No, this time of year means one thing and one thing only to him—college basketball. His annual incarnation as a rabid basketball fan leaves me with some extra [...]
